Things as simple as pencil can remind you of friendships. I have a friend who loves these pencils. One time when I asked what you want from US, he said pencils. I was surprised to hear, but I got him the pencils without further questions.
We have known each other for over 10years. In these years we have been through two broken hearts and finally rang the wedding bells with whom we thought would support us for years to come. after which our friendship took a turmoil, because we are opposite sex and we are close. So we respected our spouses and kept our distance.
Just last year, My friend and I were going to be in the same geographic location after so many years, we decided we should meet. Hence the question of what you need from US. At the time I thought it was silly and I gave him the gift, we had coffee and parted.
It's been a year and now everytime I see the pencil in someone's hand or in a store shelf, a smile crosses through my face, no matter the mood I am in. Then came to realization that its not the gift he wanted, its unique totem to remember him by. A presence of support, even when not around physically.
